Ice Dispensers at HP Pavilion or Opening Libraries in Disadvantaged Neighborhoods?

San Jose’s Choice:

Ice Dispensers at HP Pavilion or Opening Libraries in Disadvantaged Neighborhoods?

Looking beyond the headlines to read the details, the devil is found:

The opening of the Bascom & Seven Trees Libraries starting on 1/1/11 is not included.

However, the Mayor did incorporate into his budget the City Manager’s request to give the San Jose Arena Authority (the Sharks) $1.13 million dollars for improvements to the HP Pavilion which includes three new ice dispensers.  That is approximately the same amount of money which would be needed to open both Bascom & Seven Trees for six months starting in January, 2011.

The City leadership may respond that they can’t use those Capital Funds for the Operating expenses of a library.

But when people’s needs are at stake, why not find ways to make it happen?

The City should ask the San Jose Sharks, after finishing one of their more successful seasons, to give that money back to the City or to pay a portion of their increased police protection burden, for the opening of disadvantaged area libraries.  Community Service from a sports team … what a concept.  There may also be other ways.  Let’s open the dialogue rather than give our money away.

Some people see things as they are & ask “Why?” Let’s join together and see things the way they should be and say “Why not!”

Please email the mayor and council members that the Community wants Bascom & Seven Trees opened on 1/1/11.  Copy and paste from this email as you see fit.  The Budget Hearings are on June 14th at City Hall at 7 pm.  Your voice is important.

City Manager asks the Mayor & Council for $1.1 million dollars for the Sharks Tank

And we are going to cut libraries to three days a week ... And not open the Bascom & Seven Trees Libraries on 1/1/11.  In a year of difficult economic choices does this make any sense?

Check out the memo to see her request:
